What would be the best type of craft paint to use on aluminum?

I'm making Christmas ornaments by shaping aluminum can lids into angels. I don't like the full on silver look so I want to paint the lids white first, then add soft random detail in gold or another color. Would acrylic paint be sufficient to stick to the aluminum or would I need to use a primer?
